Trap: Pre-mid-1980s Janitrol (Surface Combustion / Midland-Ross / Laird / Tappan era). Mid-1980s onward (Goodman ownership from 1982; name dropped 1992) Janitrol used the Goodman 10-digit YYMM style 9704011000 (formats.json Goodman rule). Century for YY: 19YY.

Year: digits 1-2 (YY)
Week or month: month = digits 3-4

Example: serial 9704011000 decodes to April 1997.

Trap: 10-digit numeric; the widely-cited ~2002 format change is NOT documented on building-center (it shows one numeric style + a Daikin PTAC style). Century ambiguity for YY < 30. Amana HVAC after 1997 uses same Goodman format (ESTIMATE, not fetched).

Listed under Goodman in the source; Janitrol is named in that format's family and the corporate link is an estimate, not a checked fact.

Where the data plate is on a furnace

Inside the furnace: remove the upper (burner) access door and look on the inside of the door, on the blower compartment wall, or on a sticker facing you at the burner deck.

General guidance, not brand-specific: the owner's manual or the installer can point to the exact spot. See the data plate guide.

For scale only: the InterNACHI Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart for Homes lists Furnace at 15 to 25 years of expected service (nachi.org). That chart is a guideline, not a prediction for your unit.

Official lookup: the authority

Open the official Janitrol lookup takes serial number; returns warranty / registration lookup; URL verified live

This site is a reference built from published tables. The manufacturer's own lookup wins whenever the two disagree.

What we could not confirm

The era not stated format is only partially confirmed (VERIFIED-partial).
Janitrol is treated as sharing Goodman's format because the source lists it in that family; the corporate relationship itself is an estimate.
Goodman acquired Janitrol c.1982 and dropped the name in 1992. Style 1 9704011000 (mid-1980s on) = Goodman rule; style 2 0759F5616 (pre-mid-1980s Surface Combustion era) added. Any Janitrol unit still in service is 30+ years old.
