How to read the serial

era not stated formatPARTIAL

Shape ########## · example 9704011000 · confidence medium

Year: digits 1-2 (YY)
Week or month: month = digits 3-4

Example: serial 9704011000 decodes to April 1997.

Trap: 10-digit numeric; the widely-cited ~2002 format change is NOT documented on building-center (it shows one numeric style + a Daikin PTAC style). Century ambiguity for YY < 30. Amana HVAC after 1997 uses same Goodman format (ESTIMATE, not fetched).

Listed under Goodman in the source; Amana HVAC is named in that format's family.

Shape ##-##### · example 96-90391 · confidence medium

Year: digits 1-2 (YY = 1996)
Week or month: not encoded

Example: serial 96-90391 decodes to 1996.

Trap: Amana style 2 (Raytheon-era, pre-1997 Goodman purchase per history): YY-##### with a hyphen; year only.

era not stated formatVERIFIED

Shape ######### · example 040590391 · confidence medium

Year: digits 1-2 (YY = 2004)
Week or month: month = digits 3-4 (05 = May)

Example: serial 040590391 decodes to May 2004.

Trap: Amana style 3, 9-digit YYMM+5. Same shape as Coleman/Evcon 1992-2004 style and Rheem's old 9-digit (date at end). Amana style 1 (0109145052, 10-digit YYMM+6) = Goodman style 1 (see formats.json Goodman rule); NOTE the page TEXT says month = positions 4-5 but the chart image clearly marks 01 = year, 09 = month (positions 3-4), and the plate photo (ANSI Z21.47 A-1999) is consistent with Sept 2001. Use the image.

Where the data plate is on a packaged unit

On the cabinet exterior near the electrical access panel, or inside the panel door.

General guidance, not brand-specific: the owner's manual or the installer can point to the exact spot. See the data plate guide.

This site is a reference built from published tables. The manufacturer's own lookup wins whenever the two disagree.

What we could not confirm

The era not stated format is only partially confirmed (VERIFIED-partial).
Three eras on building-center: YYWW+6 numeric (Raytheon/Goodman era, to 2002; plate 9206152586), Maytag letters 2002-2006, Whirlpool 2006+. Do not confuse with Amana HVAC (Goodman YYMM). producthelp.amana.com redirects to a login page (curl 200).
